I bought this for 5 1/2 inch kyocera ceramic santoku for which there was not room in our knife block. Although the case is far too long length-wise, it is an appropriate fit for width. The rubber bumpers help keep the blade secure once it is snapped closed. I took the knife to a local store to see if the next size down would work, but it was far too narrow.

I have had one of these cases (10" variety) for going on six or seven years now. I received two more today, because my knife collection now includes more knives that I feel deserve to be kept in cases. I am a professional cook, so my original case got a lot of work, and it looks pretty much the same as the new ones that just arrived. The hinge has not worn out, and I have not lost any of the pads.

A warning though: the rubber pads will stain your knife! It is a greasy stain that I had a hard time removing with soap. I found the easiest way to remove it was just to add more grease. I recalled my freshman Chem courses, rubbed my thumb on my greasy nose, and proceeded to rub at the stain until it was gone. I suggest washing these cases in hot water with a bunch of soap, maybe twice, before actually putting a knife in them.

These are pretty much indispensable for anyone doing any sort of cooking that isn't in a kitchen with a knife block or mag strip. Don't put your knives into a knife roll naked, use these first! I'd also add that I find these much better than the sleeve-type edge protectors, which require you to put your knife into a hard plastic sandwhich blade first. It's easy to mess up your edge, they also only protect one side of the blade, and they come off easily.

Ordered this Blade Safe because I'm a klutz and cut myself practically every time I use a sharp knife. When I ordered a new, razor-sharp knife, I knew that if I didn't get something to protect myself when storing it, I'd need a trip to the Emergency Room. I can store my knife in a drawer without worrying about damage to the knife, and to me, when I take it out.
